Long-standing School Friendships

St Peter’s College prides itself on its close-knit School community which extends beyond valedictory celebrations with our past parents playing an integral role in ensuring our community remains connected long after their son(s) leave the School. The Dutton Society is our avenue to reconnect past parents and enable long-standing school friendships and engagement with St Peter’s College to continue.

Membership of the Dutton Society is complimentary and automatic upon your son’s graduation, irrespective of any other siblings still attending the School. Grandparents are also welcome to join the Society.

The Dutton Society provides a valuable vehicle to maintain links, share news, follow our children’s lives, occasionally meet face to face and keep in touch with the School. Members will be emailed the fortnightly What’s Happening at SPSC school newsletter and receive the Saints publication twice a year by email (Members may opt-out if they wish).

Who was Frederick Dutton?

Frederick Hansborough Dutton, born in Lancashire in 1812, left an indelible mark on the history of South Australia. His generosity in the 1850s in providing the fledgling school with its first piece of land in Hackney, the ‘Dutton’s Piece’, would not only cement the location of St Peter’s College but also provided us with the iconic
plane tree Avenue.

Arriving in Australia in 1830, he, alongside his brother William, embarked on a journey that led to the establishment of Anlaby Station, a pastoral empire that became a cornerstone of South Australia’s development. Dutton passed away in London in 1890, leaving a legacy characterised by resilience, determination, and generosity.

Today, the ‘Dutton’s Piece’ is occupied by the earlier buildings of the Junior School, the plane tree Avenue, seven tennis courts and the eastern half of the Girdlestone oval.
