Welcome to the Junior Years

Our Junior Years provide a dynamic and engaging learning environment for students from Prep, followed by Reception through to Year 6.

We offer a rich and diverse academic and co-curricular program within a Christian framework focused on the wellbeing of every student.  Each student is provided opportunities to build on their natural curiosity and thirst for adventure while inspiring their love of learning.

Igniting Lifelong Learners

The Junior School Curriculum is carefully structured to deliver a diverse academic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual program for our students.

The curriculum enables the attainment of academic success while also providing flexibility to cater for the wide range of abilities and interests within a class group. Our students are encouraged to think critically and creatively while developing a lifelong love for learning.

ACADEMIC FRAMEWORK

JUNIOR SCHOOL HANDBOOK

These years are vital for laying the foundations of basic skill development across key learning areas. We focus on ensuring the development of competence in both literacy and numeracy through dedicated lessons. Your son will engage in learning in the following curriculum areas, taught by teachers specialising in subjects including: Science and Technology, History, Geography, Religious Education, Physical Education, Visual Arts, Music and Chinese.

Learning for students in Years 3 to 6 is adapted to their stage of development. Students are offered a range of academic, sporting, creative and co-curricular pathways that will allow your son to develop his individual passions. Your son will learn to work with others, share ideas and solve problems in an independent and collaborative environment.

Your son will explore his curiosity through our pastoral care, outdoor education, wellness and Service Learning programs.

Our Outdoor Education program is designed to enrich students’ spirits, expand their capabilities and broaden their depth of experiences within the natural environment.

The program commences in Year 3 and culminates in the Year 10 21-day journey. Sequential camping experiences are provided to allow students to build a foundation in outdoor learning and year by year, grow in confidence and develop skills to thrive in a wilderness setting.

Our eLearning program fosters the integration of ICLT (information, communication and learning technologies) throughout the School, delivering a modern, personalised and effective learning environment. This is achieved in a range of ways, including personalised devices, internal online portal for students and parents (Keystone) and a range of innovative teaching programs.

Boys from Reception to Year 4 use a personalised iPad, provided by the School at the time of enrolment. Boys in Years 5 and 6 use a School-funded iPad and a family-funded MacBook.

St Peter’s College has been praised for its proactive approach to digital citizenship and cybersafety, and was the first School in South Australia to gain full eSmart accreditation.

Nurturing Wellbeing

At St Peter’s College, developing a student’s character is as important as fostering his intellect and wellbeing is central to all that we do. As a Christian school we aim to provide a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment while developing communication, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

The House system is integral to the School’s approach to pastoral care and provides many opportunities to participate in annual traditions and community activities, enhancing a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Boys in Prep to Year 6 are divided into four Houses. Students from Years 3 to 6 meet fortnightly and engage in inter-house competitions including sports, debating, public speaking, music and chess. House points are allocated for boys’ positive attitude, behaviour and leadership within the Junior School.
