Recently, our Year 3 students enjoyed an exciting and educational excursion to the Adelaide Central Market as part of our HASS unit, Cultural Connections. The visit provided a wonderful opportunity for the boys to explore a range of cultures through food while developing important life skills in a real-world setting.
Prior to the excursion, students selected a recipe from a given culture. They carefully researched ingredients, planned their meals and created detailed shopping lists in preparation for their visit. The boys were then challenged to locate, compare and purchase the required ingredients within a budget, putting their planning and mathematical skills into action.
As they explored the market, students visited a variety of stalls, including fruit and vegetable vendors, Asian grocers, health food stores, spices and cheese merchants. They enjoyed interacting with stallholders, asking questions about products and practising polite communication when making purchases. The experience helped students build confidence while gaining a deeper appreciation of the diverse cultures that contribute to Adelaide’s vibrant community.
Of course, no visit to the Central Market would be complete without sampling some of the delicious treats on offer. Students enthusiastically enjoyed a range of foods, including chicken wings, Portuguese tarts, pizza, pretzels and Turkish delight. These tastings sparked conversations about different flavours, ingredients and cultural traditions associated with food.
The excursion was a valuable extension of our classroom learning, allowing students to make meaningful connections to the wider community. It also encouraged independence, teamwork, decision-making and responsible budgeting. Most importantly, the boys demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout the day and represented the School with pride.
A special thank you to the many parents who helped us on this excursion, as this allowed us to break into small groups and explore the market at great depth.
