The VIVA SA All Schools Track and Field Championships is the premier athletics event on the summer calendar for all students aged 12 to Under 18 enrolled in South Australian schools. A first or second placing guarantees an athlete selection in the South Australian Schools Team which will travel to Melbourne later this term for the Australian National All Schools Track and Field Championships.
Late on the Saturday afternoon, thunder, lightning and some extremely heavy rainfall led to a delay in the roll out of the program before a rescheduling of events took place for the Sunday. Despite these unforeseen challenges, 26 St Peter’s College athletes still managed to compete across 50 events, earning a total of 4 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze medals. Many athletes also achieved multiple ‘Personal Bests’. While Andrei Chemutov (Under 15 400m), Will Cooksey (Under 16 1500m) and Benjamin Tharanisorn (Under 16 1500m) were unable to compete at the rescheduled times of their events, Athletics SA allowed their interclub achievements in the following weekend of Interclub competition to be considered for State Team selection. All three boys achieved times that would’ve medalled them at the Championships.
