On 10 September we enjoyed perfect pitch conditions and glorious weather for the Annual Languages Soccer Cup. Language students from Years 7 to 12 took to the Lloyd Oval to see who would be crowned the Junior and Senior winners for 2020.

Each language team played three 10-minute matches. We witnessed passion and skill in every game with boys giving it their all. The atmosphere was electric with spectators cheering on their teams and waving flags. A few penalties and upset wins added to the tension.

A correction to the final junior match between Germany and China meant that Germany won the match, and therefore became the overall winners of the cup by a goal difference to France. Congratulations Germany! France placed second, China third and the United Nations fourth (this team was made up of Curriculum Support and EAL students).

The senior cup was won by France due to a German team rule violation which led to a three-point deduction from Germany’s final score and a French victory. Congratulations France! Tied second position went to Germany and China with the UN placing fourth.

The German Society kindly arranged a food stall for the hungry masses, offering German pretzels and berliners. Needless to say they sold out very quickly!

Thank you to all the participants, spectators and staff for joining us for the Languages Soccer Cup 2020. Special mention and thanks to the referees. We couldn’t run this event without you.
