The internal Year 9 public speaking event, the Arnold Reid Competition, first established in 1945, took place in Term 1. The event enables students to build their creativity and public speaking prowess.

Year 9 contestants presented a six-minute speech responding to a list of topics from the 2025 Rostrum’s Voice of Youth competition. Students responded to topics such as “Break the Cycle” and “Bring Back the Magic” with speeches of their own creation.

Contestants spoke broadly about the importance of education, and social advocacy. Additionally, the competition required students to present a prepared reading from a list linked to the Year 9 curriculum in the final round.

Thank you and congratulations to all participants. This year’s finalists, Navinder Takhar (Howard) and Ethan Tran (MacDermott), presented their speeches to a Year 8 and 9 audience in Big School Room in Week 11. While the competition was closely contested, Navinder Takhar reigned victorious with an inspiring prepared speech on the importance of action in response to the prompt “From Little Things”. Similarly, his reading of an extract from George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm was engaging.

Congratulations Navinder!
