As part of our Book Week celebrations, St Peter’s College Junior School was delighted to welcome authors-in-residence Frané Lessac and Mark Greenwood. Frané inspired our Palm House boys by sharing how she draws on family experiences to spark ideas for her stories and demonstrating her vibrant illustration techniques, with the boys enthusiastically following along and creating their own artwork.
Mark Greenwood captivated our Years 3 and 4 students with his engaging storytelling and insights into the writing process. Sharing how real-life events influence his narratives, Mark demonstrated the power of curiosity and research in bringing stories to life. His History Mysteries series proved particularly popular, with boys enthralled by the suspense, hidden clues and unanswered questions woven throughout each story. Mark’s ability to leave readers wanting to know what happens next highlighted how powerful mystery and intrigue can be in motivating young readers to pick up a book.
The excitement generated by Mark’s visit was evident, with every one of his books borrowed from the library immediately following the sessions and numerous reserves placed by eager readers. Theodore (3T) enjoyed hearing about “the cursed diamond and how it travelled across the seas and turned into different things” and is now excited to read The Vanishing. Ethan (3Z) declared it the “Best lesson ever!” after hearing about The Legend of Moondyne Jo, while Terry (4K) was inspired by the prospect of “finding 30 million dollars in diamonds,” saying it made him want to read more of Mark’s books.
Both author visits provided a wonderful start to our build up to Book week, inspiring curiosity, creativity and a love of reading while demonstrating how stories can grow from family experiences, imagination and a sense of adventure.
