30 August 2024
Book Week 2024, with the theme “Reading Is Magic!”, was launched with the annual Book Week parade. This set the stage for a week dedicated to celebrating quality Australian children’s literature. Mrs Taylor only had just enough “Room on the Broom” for the Junior School leadership team, the library staff flew across Girdlestone Oval on their magic carpets and they were all joined by staff and students dressed in an amazing selection of costumes that highlighted book characters or the Book Week theme.
Throughout the week, students engaged in a range of activities celebrating Book Week award winners and nominees. The ELC students enjoyed a teddy bear’s picnic, bringing along their favourite books to share. In the Junior School, Palm House students participated in craft sessions inspired by shortlisted books, and classes in Years 2 to 6 had an opportunity to learn how to superimpose themselves onto the cover of their favourite book. 29 staircases arrived in the library to form part of the “Magical Reading Staircase” competition, and every student from Prep to Year 6 voted, with jellybeans, for their favourite shortlisted book.
Our library staff suggest checking out the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book of the Year Awards and Notables for top book picks, many of which are available to borrow from our libraries: 2024 Book of the Year Award winners
A massive magical thank you to the Junior School Library staff for pulling together an amazing week of opportunities! Thank you also to our maintenance staff for their support and all the Junior School staff for embracing Book Week. We certainly have an incredibly talented team!
Encouraging young people to read and celebrating great stories, helps nurture our reading culture. Here’s to the magic of reading!
