During the Term 3 holidays, students volunteered with Kickstart for Kids at ‘Camp KickStart’. This school holiday care program supports vulnerable and disadvantaged children aged five to thirteen who are experiencing hardship by providing them with a fun, safe and inclusive environment. Our students volunteered for three days as mentors. Here are their reflections:
“In the recent holidays I was involved in the Kickstart for Kids holiday camp. 47 kids were picked up by volunteers and taken to Parafield Gardens school. Here we spent a lot of time playing with the kids, whether it was basketball, soccer or just a game of hide and seek. The little kids had so much fun just playing and making new friends. Each day we did an activity such as bowling, Inflatable World and the cinemas. It was so special to build relationships with the kids because it was evident that a vast majority were struggling with different home situations so it was amazing to see them having fun and thriving in a safe environment. This experience gave me a new perspective about just how lucky I truly am.”

“Kickstart for Kids was a great experience for myself and the other members as we really enjoyed helping other kids feel included and make sure they all had lots of fun. I surprised myself by realising I could interact with younger kids better. I would recommend this to others as it’s very rewarding and makes you feel good that you have made a kid’s day that much better.”

“I really enjoyed hanging out with the kids, and it was really rewarding knowing that I made a difference in these kids’ lives.”
