Our Year 8 Chinese classes took part in a vibrant and engaging cultural lesson as part of the School’s Chinese New Year celebrations. Through a combination of storytelling and hands-on activities, students explored key traditions associated with this important festival and deepened their understanding of its cultural significance.
A highlight of the lesson was dumpling making. Students learned about the history and symbolism of dumplings in Chinese culture, particularly their close connection to Chinese New Year. Representing reunion, prosperity and good fortune, dumplings reflect the strong emphasis on family values and shared blessings at this time of year.
By observing and discussing the preparation process, students gained a deeper appreciation of both the culinary tradition and the cultural meanings behind this well-loved festive dish. The excitement continued with a lively Chopstick Challenge, where students used chopsticks to pick up jelly beans. This fun and energetic activity encouraged focus, coordination and perseverance, while introducing students to an everyday aspect of Chinese dining culture.
Friendly competition and plenty of laughter filled the Da Costa Dining Hall as students practised and refined their chopstick skills. Through these interactive experiences, students broadened their cultural knowledge while building practical skills and confidence.
The lesson successfully combined history, tradition and experiential learning, making it a memorable and meaningful part of this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations. Special thanks to Mr Stuart MacDonald, Site Manager of Chartwells, and his team for their generous support of the dumpling-making activity.
