20 February 2025
This year, Chinese New Year fell on Wednesday 29 January, marking the beginning of the Year of the Snake – a time of transformation, wisdom, and personal growth. According to Chinese astrology, the Snake symbolises intelligence, mystery, and renewal. Students from Years 7 to 12 at SPSC embraced the festive spirit through a variety of cultural activities.
Year 7 students expressed their hopes for the new year by writing wishes and goals to decorate their classrooms. They also crafted beautiful Chinese New Year ornaments for their parents and grandparents, gaining a deeper appreciation of traditional celebrations.
Year 8 Chinese classes had a hands-on experience making dumplings, followed by the joy of eating their own handmade dumplings. They also put their chopstick skills to the test in a lively Jelly Bean competition.
Year 9 Chinese Language and Literature students explored the tradition of red couplets, creating their own to bring good fortune to their families.
Meanwhile, students in Years 10 to 12 participated in various in-class activities, including watching the Chinese New Year Gala and enjoying sweet glutinous rice dumplings, a classic festival treat.
To mark the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations, we held a special event on Wednesday 12 February. The China Tour Review Night brought together students who had participated in the China Tour and their parents, providing a wonderful opportunity to showcase their experiences and learning. This meaningful gathering was a perfect way to conclude both our Chinese New Year festivities and our memorable journey to China.
