Students in Years 1 to 6 recently celebrated the Mid-Autumn Chinese Festival in a very special way. Listening to the story of Hou Yi and Chang E, the boys discovered the origin of moon cakes and learnt that this legendary couple have been remembered in the story of Beijing Opera.
In the opera, nine suns are painted on Hou Yi’s face and he is depicted as a very brave figure by the dominant red colouring on his face. Interesting, male characters usually wear heavier make-up than female characters in Beijing Opera.
Boys celebrated the festival by designing their own masks with colours to create their own version of Hou Yi and Chang E’s faces. The boys thoroughly enjoyed creating something meaningful and colourful.
