Junior School Chess: Honouring our talent and top performers

This year has marked an extraordinary chapter for Junior School Chess at St Peter’s College. With an impressive number of students joining our chess ranks, their dedication and skill have elevated our School’s presence in the wider chess community. Each student has demonstrated resilience, focus, and sportsmanship, truly embodying the core values that chess instills in young minds.

In 2024, our players have developed their strategic thinking and camaraderie, proving that chess is far more than just a game—it’s a journey of personal growth and discipline. From intense lunchtime practices to Friday afternoon tournaments, our Junior School players have made St Peter’s College a recognised and respected venue within the South Australian chess community. Their participation has not only sharpened their individual skills but has also contributed to a shared sense of accomplishment and pride among their peers.

To celebrate these achievements, the entire Junior School Chess team was honored with certificates from the SA Junior Chess League. Each player’s dedication has made this a very memorable year, and we look forward to seeing their continued growth and success in the years to come.

A Special Spotlight: 2024 Rising Star Chess Award

This year, we introduced a special accolade, the Rising Star Chess Award, dedicated to celebrating the outstanding promise and potential of one exceptional student. This inaugural award was presented to our first ever recipient, Abraham Lee (Year 4), whose skill and sportsmanship have shone brightly. Abraham’s dedication to the game and his unwavering commitment have set an inspiring example for his peers and the entire Junior School chess community. His award is a recognition of both his current accomplishments and the bright future that lies ahead for him in chess.

The assembly also featured recognition for our top Junior School Chess players of 2024, many of whom represented our School with distinction in the prestigious Evelyn Koshnitsky Shield. This annual event serves as an opportunity for young chess enthusiasts to showcase their talents, and our students rose to the occasion with pride and passion.

Our award recipients included: Asher Brittingham, Neal Shah, Eván Higginson, and Abraham Lee, each honored with a Chess Award and EK Shield Certificate. Oliver Tang, Ryan Nie, Aryan Jabery, Luke Buttignol, William Galea, Kai Chauhan, and Harry Martin, were recognised for their commendable performances with EK Shield Certificates.

With a very exciting and fruitful year behind us, we celebrate our students’ achievements and look forward to seeing St Peter’s College’s chess players reach new heights in 2025.

Thank you to our staff, including Mr Hall and the entire chess family community for your unwavering support of our players.
