This year, students from across St Peter’s College had the unique opportunity to collaborate with old scholar and acclaimed artist, Tristan Kerr (FLL 2003), to create a striking new mural for the wall adjacent to the Drama Centre. The project combined the creativity of our current students with the experience of a professional artist who has carved out a successful career in Visual Arts and Design.

The process began in May, when Tristan returned to the School to work closely with the Year 11 Visual Art students.. Together, they explored the idea of abstractly representing their school journeys. Using a range of textures and techniques, and guided by a cohesive colour palette, the boys developed works that reflected their individual experiences while contributing to a collective vision.

From there, Tristan worked behind the scenes to adapt and reimagine sections of the students’ pieces, weaving them together into a single large-scale design. His approach ensured that each student’s contribution was acknowledged, while also creating a unified composition that would sit proudly on campus for years to come.

The mural itself was brought to life on Arts Day, when students from Years 7 to 9 joined Tristan in the hands-on painting process. For some of these younger students, this was their first opportunity to work collaboratively with a professional artist, and they embraced the chance to contribute to a lasting legacy at the School.

Their energy and enthusiasm added to the vibrancy of the project, further highlighting the power of cross-year level collaboration in the Arts. In the week following Arts Day, Tristan returned to the School to refine and complete the work, adding his own finishing touches that brought depth, balance, and cohesion to the mural. The final result is a dynamic and colourful piece that not only enlivens the School grounds but also represents the spirit of collaboration across year levels, disciplines, and generations of St Peter’s College students.

We extend our sincere thanks to Tristan Kerr for his generosity, creativity and commitment, and we look forward to the mural inspiring future cohorts of SPSC students.
