On Thursday 21 May, we held our annual Concert Bands Showcase. This year, we combined the Senior School concert bands from St Peter’s College and Walford Anglican School for Girls, enjoying a range of captivating performances. This included each band playing their own item, in addition to three combined sets between the bands from SPSC and Walford. Combining concerts with Walford provides an authentic co-ed opportunity, bringing together like-minded students in an artistic pursuit.
St Peter’s College has seen significant growth in the bands program over the years, with there now being seven concert bands across the whole school (two in Junior School, five in Senior School). Students begin their learning journey in the bands stream from the Year 4 Band Program – a compulsory curriculum for all Year 4 students to learn a wind, brass or percussion instrument. The program is bookended with the top-tier auditioned “Symphonic Band”, and the concert band program is seeing strong success in engagement and standard, with clear pathways for student growth and achievement. Each year, the Concert Bands Showcase provides the opportunity for our concert bands to perform within the wind band genre, which is a unique genre within the broader subject of Music.
Following the successful performances from the Concert Bands Showcase, our concert bands now turn their attention to the ABODA SA Band and Orchestra Festival in August, Week 4 of Term 3. We look forward to performing once again at the festival this year, which provides students the opportunity to extend themselves in music performance, and to be benchmarked with other schools across the state.
