After a successful campaign in the South Australian Debating Association School’s Competition, two of our top division teams faced fierce competition in their respective Grand Finals. The intense competition was all the more illuminated by its setting – Parliament House.

Our First Team in Senior A faced Prince Alfred College 1 for the third time this season. We were victorious against PAC at the Debating Winter Intercol but had a devastating loss against them in Round 5 (the first, and only, defeat of the season for this strong team). And so, it came down to the Grand Final. SPSC were negative for the topic: ‘that non-violent criminals should never be sent to prison’. SPSC brought their best and the five-person panel unanimously awarded the debate to SPSC. Our brilliant second speaker articulated his way into winning Best Speaker, an accolade that is so well deserved.

Our Senior B team (made entirely of Year 10 students) went head-to-head with Year 12 students from Norwood International High School. SPSC argued for ‘abolishing all political parties in Australia’. In a split decision (4-1), SPSC were also awarded the win. Our dedicated third speaker, Adan (Year 10), also won Best Speaker for his division.

We are so proud of the successful season overall for our Debating Program at SPSC, but we are especially proud of these Grand Final winners. All the boys involved from these two teams have demonstrated their commitment in representing SPSC but have also taken the time in nurturing the program by coaching younger boys and debating for other teams when needed. Well done!
