The Dragon Boat Festival is one of China’s four main festivals and was celebrated earlier in June. During this festival, it is Chinese tradition to watch dragon boat racing and make sticky rice dumplings (zongzi) to eat together with family and friends. In Week 9 of Term 2, with the help from Chinese parents, Year 3-6 Chinese students made their own sticky rice dumplings, which they took home to show, cook and share with their families.

While it was challenging making them with just bamboo leaf and string, the boys showed patience and eventually mastered it. The students were visited by Ms Jasmine Taylor, Head of Junior School, Mr Tim Browning, Headmaster and Mr Marcus Blackburn, Deputy Headmaster/Head of Senior School to help and get their hands dirty.

The boys enjoyed this special celebration and now have a new appreciation of this Chinese tradition, and will look forward to eating soft, warm and pure sticky rice dumplings each winter.
