On Tuesday 26 May, the Chinese Society hosted the Dragon Boat Festival Social Night, bringing over 80 students together from St Peter’s College and Seymour College for an evening of cultural celebration, friendship and fun.
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is one of the most significant traditional festivals in Chinese culture. Throughout the night, students participated in a variety of interactive games inspired by both traditional and modern Chinese culture. The event encouraged teamwork, communication and collaboration, while also providing opportunities for students to interact and form new friendships.
Students also enjoyed a range of performances presented by talented students from both schools. The International Students Band, featuring SPSC students Rainy (Year 11 HWK), Zi Yi (Year 11 SHT), and Carbon (Year 11 HWD), performed popular Chinese songs, while Lucas (Year 12 S&A) and a Seymour College student presented a duet performance. These performances showcased the richness of contemporary Chinese music and provided students with an opportunity to share and celebrate Chinese culture through the performing arts.
Students also enjoyed a dinner featuring a selection of traditional Chinese dishes. To celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, participants were also served zongzi, a traditional sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves. Sharing these traditional foods allowed students to experience an important aspect of Chinese culture and added to the festive atmosphere of the evening.
The social event provided students with an opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture and traditions while building friendships across schools and backgrounds. A big thank you to all Chinese committee members for their tireless work and Mr Browning, Mr Nolan, Mr Carter, Mr Eaton, Father Theo from SSLT, Dr Garcia, Ms Qiu, Ms Ng from Languages Faculty, Ms Nair and Rev Julia for their support, also Mr Hall for venue set-up and Mr Kinsella for sound support.
The Chinese Society looks forward to hosting more cultural and social events throughout the year to further celebrate and share Chinese culture.
