On Friday evening, May 30th, over 60 students and staff from St Peter’s College and Seymour College joined together to celebrate Chinese culture in an unforgettable way, gearing up for the Dragon Boat Festival that is cherished by Chinese people around the world. The night was filled with fun activities after another and it didn’t matter if you knew everyone or barely anyone, by the end of the night, everyone had chatted, laughed and shared a few awkward but fun moments. It was the perfect way to get to know others and also to share cultures and have fun.
Max Au (Year 12) from St Peter’s College and Rihanna Quan (Year 10) from Seymour College did a fantastic job guiding us through the program, smoothly introducing each segment and keeping energy levels high. One of the evening’s standout moments was undoubtedly the student performances. William Li (Year 12) took the stage first, delivering a breathtaking solo that showcased his musical talent. The applause barely died down before Axel Ling (Year 12) and Rainy Fang (Year 10) captivated us all with their heartfelt duet with the drums and piano of a Chinese piece.
Of course, no celebration would be complete without a delicious dinner and the food did not disappoint. There was fragrant rice, an array of tasty sides and of course, zongzi (粽子), which are iconic sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. Afterwards, the games began and they were both entertaining and educational. In teams, we tackled a Dragon Boat Festival–themed Kahoot quiz: questions ranged from “Which legendary poet inspired the festival?” to “What’s the significance of racing dragon boats?” Shouts of excitement and friendly jeers erupted every question.
Next came “Who Is the Spy?”, where sly glances and quick thinking reigned supreme and “Pictionary”, which had us frantically sketching characters and festival symbols as our teammates tried to guess. Each round was packed with laughter, dramatic guesses and plenty of high-fives. By the end of the night, it was clear that this Chinese Social was about far more than games or great food, it was a celebration of friendship, cultural appreciation and shared learning. Whether it was your first time experiencing a Dragon Boat–themed event or your third, every moment reinforced how powerful it can be when people come together to embrace diversity. I know I’m not the only one already counting down the days until the next gathering!
