Fifteen eager students from across Years 7 to 9 gathered for the latest meeting of SPSC’s French Society in the final week of Term 1, ready to learn about France’s Easter traditions and to make some flying Easter bells.
The tradition of all church bells falling silent across France in the days leading up to Easter Sunday stems from the story that the bells fly to the Vatican to be blessed before returning on Easter morning to drop chocolate eggs for children to find.
Students made and decorated winged paper bells, and wrote Easter messages on them in French. And, following the previous meeting’s French-cheese-tasting session, the boys were once again treated to a taste of gastronomy – this time in the shape of a few chocolate eggs to place inside their flying bells.
Thanks to Ms Rachel Spiby for providing the flying-bell templates, and it was fantastic to see so many familiar faces continuing to engage with different aspects of French culture every second week at French Society.
