This term we had the pleasure of welcoming our 2023 Artist in Residence, Zinia King. Zinia is a South Australian artist and illustrator who draws wildlife characters that capture the imagination.

She is inspired by beautiful native plants and animals in the Adelaide Hills and is passionate about Australian flora and fauna.

Zinia worked with all the boys in the Junior school, sharing her knowledge, skills, and techniques as she shows us how to draw animals, and their unique characteristics. Zinia taught the boys how to capture details with fine liner pens and vivid watercolour washes, where each animal drawing was surrounded by inspiration from the Australian landscape.

Zinia shared her techniques, instructing how to draw Australian animals and flowers, as the boys learnt about Australian flora and fauna. Animals were sketched and outlined in waterproof pens, with masses of patterns to enhance the animals’ body. Zinia then showed the boys how to apply a ‘wet on wet’ technique with watercolour, where multiple washes were applied to enhance the animals and vibrant washes of colour enhanced the background.

Each boy’s experience with Zinia was exciting and enjoyable. The boys learnt so much about creating illustrations and drawing, and they are incredibly proud of their artworks. The artworks that the boys created with Zinia will be on display in our Junior School Art Exhibition, which will be held next term in Week 2.
