It has been an amazing first half of the term, with something eventful happening every other day around the grounds of St Peter’s College. However, within the hustle and bustle of everyday life, many of us are caught seesawing between activities all the time. There is almost no break. I had an insightful chat with Mr Nolan recently that struck a chord. He posed the question to me: “What does your quiet time look like, and when do you have it?” Apart from scrolling on social media and very occasionally reading, I had no answer. I suspect that self-admission rings true to an alarming number of people, especially within our community. When are we setting aside time in our day to disconnect? When are we actually giving our minds a break, because after all, we are not machines. I challenge everyone this week to find 15 minutes in their day to properly switch off and be present in the moment. Whether that means sitting in your backyard and appreciating the sunset, meditating, or something else, I encourage you to make it a priority.
This week holds special significance for our entire community, with Saturday being International Women’s Day. IWD is a time to celebrate the achievements of women and to recognise the role we all play in creating a fairer and more inclusive world. It’s a day that reminds us of the progress that has been made, but also challenges us to think about what more we can do – both now and in the future.
We are fortunate to be part of a school that prepares us for leadership in many different ways. There will be boys in our community who will go on to influence workplaces, industries and communities. Others will lead in different ways – through the teams we’re part of, the friendships we build and the example we set. No matter the path we take, the way we treat and support those around us will shape the world we live in.
Earlier this week, I had the privilege to sit down with Fiona Dorman. Fiona is the President of the National Council of Women Australia, a member of the Council of Governors here at St Peter’s College and is also a parent in our School. We spoke about leadership, respect and the small actions we can take every day to build a community with greater equality and connection.
As you watch this video, I strongly encourage you to think about the kind of leader you want to be, and how you can use your voice to stand up for others. How are you treating people with respect and contributing to a culture where everyone has the same opportunities to succeed?
