Commissioning of our Junior School Student Leaders
Simon Sinek, author of Leaders Eat Last, explains that earning a promotion or leadership role is the easy part – the real challenge begins afterward. When adults receive a promotion or new position at work, they might celebrate with a special dinner alongside colleagues, friends or family. But once the celebration ends, the real work of the role truly begins.
How does this translate to the context of our Junior School Student Leaders? The boys who have been appointed to leadership roles for 2025 have already demonstrated the school values of truth, respect and service during their time at St Peter’s College. Walking across the stage to receive a badge, however, is easier than what their leadership roles will entail in the year ahead.
Receiving a badge is easier than giving an opening speech at the Art Exhibition, public speaking in Assembly, or comparing at an annual music concert.
Stepping up to shake the Headmaster’s hand is far easier than running alongside Junior Primary students supporting them to get across the finish line at Cross Country, particularly after running your own race.
Leading chants at Swimming Carnival, supporting a Head of House in the lead up to the House Singing competition, always setting an example by wearing the correct uniform with your socks pulled up are all going to be more challenging too.
Speaking up when you see something that doesn’t meet our School values or expectations, owning it when you make a mistake, being able to ask for forgiveness, show up again and give it another go to learn and grow… that’s the really hard stuff our Student leaders have been chosen to do and what we can all set one’s sights on, regardless of leadership badge or title.
Congratulations to the student leaders who were presented with their badges by Headmaster, Tim Browning, at a commissioning service lead by Rev Julia last Friday. I would also like to acknowledge all our Year 6 students as they are also new leaders within our community with the capacity to serve others and in truth and righteousness and demonstrate what it means to be strong and lovely too.
