Across the past fortnight, it has been heartening to see our school value of service so clearly lived out within our community.

Tommy, in Year 5, approached the Student Voice and Action group to ask if his father could share his story at Assembly. We are grateful to Matt Hutchinson (YNG 1997), Tommy’s dad, for joining us last Friday to share his remarkable journey. Matt, an old scholar of St Peter’s College, hiked approximately 4,250 kilometres along the Pacific Crest Trail to raise funds for educational scholarships for disadvantaged children. Travelling from Mexico, through the United States, and up to Canada, he encountered bears, freezing conditions and breathtaking landscapes along the way.

Matt concluded his presentation by reminding students how privileged they are to have access to an education at St Peter’s College. He highlighted that only around 1% of children worldwide have the opportunity to attend a school like ours and encouraged the boys not to feel guilty about the opportunities they have, but to approach them with gratitude.

Our thanks again to Tommy for bringing this idea to Student Voice and Action, and for demonstrating initiative in seeing it shared with the wider school community.

Glen and Daniel, two of our Prefects, also spoke at Assembly last week about their Nurture Kit message-writing project. They, too, showed initiative in contacting me to explore how Junior School students could contribute to this Adelaide Rotary effort. Throughout the week, boys have been visiting the Library at lunchtime to write messages to include in the kits. These kits—containing items such as tea, coffee, chocolate, candles and skincare products—will be distributed to staff at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital as a gesture of appreciation for the important and often demanding work they do.

Well done, and thank you, to all the students who have generously given their time to support this project.
