There are moments that truly capture the essence of what it means to be part of an exceptional community of learning. This week, one such moment unfolded, not within the walls of a classroom, but on a windy day during recess play on Girdlestone Oval.

Walking down The Avenue, I spotted a large group of industrious Year 6 students, working collectively and productively on creating a mound of autumn leaves. The gusts of wind that skimmed leaves off the top, did not stop the team of boys from persevering in their pursuit.

Outdoor experiences such as these offer a unique and powerful context for developing the attributes we value so highly in our learners. The boys demonstrated collaboration. They showed persistence, returning again and again to their task despite the intermittent flurries. And importantly, they displayed creativity – experimenting with new approaches, reshaping their designs and finding joy in the process itself.

The crunch of leaves underfoot, the pace of boys running in an ever expanding radius from the pile, the shared sense of purpose, remind us that learning is not confined to desks, screens or structured lessons. It thrives equally in open spaces, in unanticipated challenges and in the freedom to explore.

In a world where schedules are full and technology is ever-present, the importance of time in nature cannot be overstated. Outdoor play nurtures physical wellbeing, encourages risk-taking in a safe environment and can strengthen social connection. It allows children to test their limits, solve problems organically and experience the satisfaction that comes from effort and perseverance.

We recognise that what our students discover outdoors, about themselves, about others, and about the world around them, is just as valuable as what they learn inside the classroom.

The scene on the oval was a welcome reminder: when boys are given space to move, create and collaborate, there is an opportunity to demonstrate the attributes of being an exceptional learner; perhaps most importantly, pure joy!
