As the end of term draws near, the holidays can feel both close and still just out of reach. At this point in the term, it is not unusual to find it harder to maintain momentum or to feel consistently positive. There is often a sense that there is more to be done than time allows, and that the demands keep coming.
This week a reading from St Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians (9:6–8) was shared by Father Theo:
“The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.”
At first glance, it might feel counterintuitive. When time and energy feel limited, the instinct is often to hold back. However, this passage offers a different perspective — that even when we feel stretched, choosing to give, particularly of our time and attention, can be sustaining rather than depleting.
Our days are busy and, at times, overwhelming. Yet there can be something restorative in stepping momentarily away from the list and being present for others.
A highlight of my own week has been spending time listening to Reception students read. Like many of you, I am aware of the emails still waiting, the Junior School Friends of Saints Quiz Night costume yet to be organised, and the familiar carpark concern to follow up. However, taking that time created a sense of calm and provided renewed energy to return to those tasks with greater clarity.
As fatigue sets in for both our boys and our community, it may be worth considering a simple shift: rather than focusing only on what remains to be done, look for a small opportunity to give — a moment of attention, patience, or kindness.
Often, it is these small acts that help us regain the energy needed to see the term through well.
I thank my team for their ongoing dedication to their work and the way in which they support their students and each other.
I look forward to seeing you around the grounds over the weekend, and in particular parents’ costumes at the JSFoS Quiz night on Saturday.
Please remember, I am always open to feedback and suggestions, and encourage you to reach out via email should you wish to meet: jtaylor@stpeters.sa.edu.au
Have a lovely weekend.
