Last week, when stopping by Ms Till’s Year 5 class, students were talking about Help Around the House by Morris Gleitzman. Until then, I hadn’t read it myself.
Inspired by 5T’s recommendation, I attempted to borrow the book from my local library, only to discover there was a waiting list. Unable to visit the school library straight away, I reactivated my Audible account and began listening; I’m so glad that I did.
I’ve listened to it every day since receiving the recommendation from those Year 5 boys, and I’ve loved discovering how closely the main character, Ludo, reflects many of the values we hold dear at St Peter’s College.
Ludo is not perfect, but he takes responsibility, cares for others, helps his family and faces challenges with courage. In fact, many of the characters in Help Around the House do the same. Through everyday events and relationships, they discover that happiness is not something that simply appears. Rather, it grows from the people around us, the responsibilities we embrace, and the acts of care we show each day. The ordinary happenings of life become opportunities to demonstrate kindness, responsibility and courage.
Coincidentally, I also began reading another book this week, The Making of Men by Dr Arne Rubinstein. In it, Rubinstein explores the connection between happiness and what he calls the “happenings” of our lives. His message is both simple and profound: happiness is often found not by pursuing it directly, but by being fully engaged in the experiences, relationships and opportunities that surround us each day.
As I look around our School, I see countless examples of these meaningful happenings.
An extreme handball competition at lunchtime, the Strings and Orchestra Concert, the Scotch versus SPSC Soccer Festival, Disco Chess are more than activities on a calendar. They are opportunities to learn, contribute, connect and belong. They help students discover new interests, build friendships and develop a sense of purpose within our community.
I believe it is through these shared experiences that happiness grows.
Thank you to our students, staff and families for contributing so richly to the life of our School. It is your energy, commitment and presence that make our community so vibrant.
After all, it is often the everyday happenings we share together that create lasting happiness.
Please remember, I am always open to feedback and suggestions and encourage you to reach out via email should you wish to meet: jtaylor@stpeters.sa.edu.au
