As I prepare to conclude my time at St Peter’s College and take up a new role in Queensland, the past fortnight has provided a fitting reminder of all that makes this community so special.
At its heart, this is a community defined by generosity and kindness. Generosity begins as a willingness to give of ourselves. Kindness is how that generosity is experienced by others. It is seen in the small, everyday actions that shape a community, a word of encouragement, the inclusion of someone who might otherwise be left out, support offered without expectation of recognition.
In a world that often promotes individualism, this is something truly distinctive. At St Peter’s College we are called to something greater, to be part of a community shaped by our Anglican identity and grounded in the values of Truth, Respect, and Service. These are not abstract ideals; they are lived out daily in the way we treat one another.
As we pause to reflect on the term and the semester that has been, it is worth asking a simple but powerful question – “how have we made others feel?” Not only in the visible moments of success, but in the quieter spaces, when no one is watching, in our conversations, and in how we speak about others. It is in these moments that character is formed, and through these moments that a community is strengthened.
We are reminded, too, of how quickly time passes. For our students, particularly those in their final year, this chapter is drawing to a close. For all of us, there is value in recognising the privilege of being part of this School, of working and learning alongside people of such generosity, talent and care. It is a privilege not to be taken lightly.
Gratitude, therefore, should sit at the heart of all we do. Gratitude for the opportunities we are given, for the relationships we build, and for the shared experiences that shape us. To be part of St Peter’s College carries with it a responsibility – to contribute, to give back, and to leave the community stronger than we found it.
As I move on, I do so with a deep sense of thanks, for the warmth, support and generosity that I have experienced here. This is a community that lives its values with authenticity and purpose, and it has been a great honour to be part of it.
As you look ahead, the challenge remains clear. Let us continue to be a community that gives generously of time and spirit. Let us make kindness not an occasional act, but a daily habit. Let us be people who lift others up, who create spaces of genuine inclusion, and who leave a positive mark on those around us.
Because in doing so, we not only strengthen this community, we become the kind of people others trust, respect and are grateful to walk alongside.
And that is what makes St Peter’s College truly special.
