There is a rhythm to this time of year in the Senior School, even if at times the pace can feel frenetic. We begin the process of farewelling one group of students, prepare another to step forward and pause to recognise those who have represented the School so well across the winter season.
Our House Dinners are now underway and, in many respects, they mark the beginning of the long goodbye to our Year 12 students and families. These occasions are always special. It is wonderful to hear mentors reflect on each student’s journey, including the growth they have witnessed, the contribution each boy has made, the friendships formed and the character revealed along the way. The years pass remarkably quickly, and these evenings give us an important opportunity to slow down and acknowledge the individual story behind each student.
While the long goodbye has begun, there is still important work ahead. For our Year 12 students seeking a strong academic finish, the challenge is to remain focused and make the most of the weeks that remain. Your presence on campus and commitment to maintaining school routines will support you in that endeavour.
At the same time, we are preparing to welcome a new group of student leaders into formal roles at the end of Term 3. Leadership at SPSC is not simply a position or a blazer; it is an act of service. The best student leaders understand that influence comes through what they contribute to others: setting standards, being inclusive, noticing what needs to be done and being prepared to do it. As our Year 12 leaders prepare to hand over responsibility, one of the exciting aspects of this process is seeing new students step forward, including some who may discover a capacity for leadership that neither they nor others had fully recognised.
Last week also brought the winter sporting season to its conclusion with the annual Intercol. Across nine sports, it was terrific to see the skill and determination of our students, alongside the community spirit that makes Intercol such an important occasion. Strong performances across the program reflected what has been a very successful winter season, but equally pleasing was the way students supported one another and represented the School. In many ways, Intercol was another reminder that one season ends as another begins.
These moments of farewells, handovers, competition and community remind us that school life is made up of seasons. Each provides an opportunity to contribute, to grow and, ultimately, to leave something worthwhile for those who follow.
