Despite commencing the year in a hybrid mode it has been an extremely successful start to the school year. I am delighted with the energy and enthusiasm our students and staff have demonstrated upon their return, both here on campus and online.

In Kath Murdoch’s article, The art of inquiry. . . from a distance: Part 1, there is recognition of teachers creating culture, even when teaching remotely. We know that designing tasks and setting work for students to complete is one way of delivering an online learning program but being live and interactive is true teaching and what our students need.

Whether it has been on campus, via Zoom or Teams, or during check-in phone calls, it has been exceptional that our Junior School learning community has been able to connect with one another in the way it has this past fortnight. Thank you to parents and colleagues for your support in making this happen.

Commissioning of our Junior School leaders

On Friday 4 February at a Commissioning Service led by our School Chaplain, Father Theo McCall, all Junior School student leaders affirmed their promise to fulfill their leadership obligations faithfully and to lead the student body with wisdom, courage and compassion.

We congratulate the following students on their appointments:

  • Junior School Captain: Andrew Lucas
  • Junior School Vice-Captain: Charlie Johnson
  • Art Captain: Aarnav Sanghavi
  • Music Captain: Elliot Lam
  • Sport Captain: Matthew Harris
  • Alliston Jones House Captains: Austin Speirs and Callum Foreman
  • Brooks House Captains: Aarit Kothari and Jenson Lau
  • Clayton Dyer House Captains: Philip Makooh and George Bass
  • Stokes Ware House Captains: Harry Steele and George Iles

During the service, I referenced a quote from Leaders Eat Last, written by Simon Sinek: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

With or without a badge or a title, all our students can be leaders within our Junior School through their actions. I also reference the words shared by 2022 School Captain, Chirath Lekamge, at his induction ceremony last week: “Your days here at Saints are numbered, so be tenacious, be confident, be unrelenting in all that you do. But do it with grace, do it with kindness, and do it with humility. And importantly, be proud of yourself.”

This is a message I will continue to remind our students of throughout the school year.
