Winter House Games

Last Thursday, despite the cold weather and the odd shower, we were fortunate that the boys in Years 3 to 6 were able to enjoy participating in Winter House Games, competing in Soccer, Basketball, Australian Rules Football and Hockey. It was wonderful to see the boys engage in the competition with enthusiasm and a team focused mind set.

In the past weeks we have been talking about the difference between fan culture and performance culture. Mr Barnaby Eaton, Director of Sport and HPE, has spoken to the boys about the contrast in the way elite sportsmen and women celebrate winning a point, a set, a match, or a gold medal at the Olympics. To put that into our school context; yes, we need to celebrate the small wins, especially in a case of a student who hasn’t kicked a point all season, and scores his first goal for the year! We also need to be humble when we ‘win big’ and be grateful to our competitors for giving our students an opportunity to be their best on the sporting field.

As our winter sport season draws to a close at the end of Week 5, it is important for students, staff and parents alike to reflect on the difference between performance culture and fan culture and to set a positive and respectful tone, both on the field and on the sidelines.
