As we celebrate the achievements of our students during the recent presentation of Colours and Symbols, I extend my congratulations to all who were recognised. Whether students were celebrated today or are still working towards their goals, it is important to acknowledge that success is built on collective effort. Striving for excellence is about more than awards; it’s about the dedication to consistently give your best, and each of us has that capability.
This week, our focus on mental health has been reinforced by Blue Week and Are You Okay? Any Day, a timely reminder of the importance of community support. We were privileged to hear from Nathan Bolton (YNG 2005), a former Special Operations Engineer, who shared his deeply personal journey with PTSD and Major Depression after his service in Afghanistan. Nathan spoke candidly about the challenges he faced and how the support of others played a crucial role in his recovery. His openness highlighted a key lesson – that seeking help and showing vulnerability are essential to overcoming life’s difficulties.
Nathan’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the value of community support, not only in overcoming mental health challenges but also in strengthening the bonds that hold us together. His message was clear: vulnerability is not a weakness but a strength that cultivates deeper relationships and greater resilience. By allowing ourselves to be open and honest, we create connections that have a positive and lasting impact on our wellbeing.
At SPSC, we are committed to providing an environment where mental health and wellbeing are supported. Blue Week and Are You Okay? Any Day have given our students important tools to check in on one another, open conversations, and access support when needed. These opportunities to learn and grow in a supportive community ensure that our students carry with them the values of empathy and resilience long after their time at school.
As we move forward, we hope that the lessons we’ve shared about vulnerability, support, and the strength of community will resonate deeply with our students. May these insights guide them as they navigate both their personal lives and academic pursuits, shaping them into compassionate and resilient individuals.
Wishing all families a wonderful weekend.
