Farewelling the Class of 2026

Our five-chapter valedictory celebrations have provided an opportunity to pause and recognise a significant milestone in the lives of our graduating students and their families. Through the words shared, the singing and ceremony, we have acknowledged the friendships, experiences and relationships that have shaped each boy’s time at St Peter’s College.

Such occasions bring pride in all that has been achieved, gratitude for those who have supported the journey, and anticipation of what lies ahead. We also acknowledge the disappointments, challenges and mistakes encountered along the way. These moments are part of the story too, often providing the most significant opportunities for growth.

In their final Chapel service, I invited our graduates to consider the purpose of gathering regularly in this sacred space throughout their schooling. What have we hoped they would hear, understand and carry into their lives beyond these walls and fields?

At the heart of the answer is the Christian invitation to love God and love your neighbour as yourself. This virtue underpins our founding purpose and finds expression in our motto, Pro Deo et Patria. It challenges each of us to consider the way we live: the priorities we establish, the injustices we tolerate, the truth we defend and the generosity we extend to others.

To the Class of 2026, we hope you will find success in the pursuits that inspire you. We hope, too, that your success will enable others to flourish. There is great purpose and satisfaction in giving someone a hand up, standing beside someone who needs support, and using your abilities in service of the common good. The enduring challenge of your education here is to choose life for yourselves and to enable life for others.

To our parents and families, thank you for entrusting us with your sons. We recognise the commitment, sacrifices and daily encouragement that have supported them to reach this moment. I also extend my deep gratitude to every member of staff. Thank you for the care and encouragement you offer our boys through your daily interactions.

As part of our valedictory celebrations, I had the honour of presenting the prestigious Keys Award, the School’s highest recognition for outstanding co-curricular achievement. This year’s recipients exemplify excellence through both performance and attitude. Congratulations to Ethan Herbert (Football) and Yongen Song (Ice Hockey) on your exceptional achievements.

I also pay tribute to our School Captains, Archie Braithwaite and Henry Burton, for supporting and inspiring boys across the School. Thank you for the dedication, generosity and pride with which you have served our community.

Congratulations to incoming Captains, John Lucas and Will Foreman, and our newly inducted Year 11 leaders. I am confident they will continue to build on the strong foundations laid by the Class of 2026. Leadership is not defined by a badge or a title but by who you are and the influence you have on those around you. Whether or not you hold an official position, you each have the power to lead and make a difference within our community.

To the Class of 2026, we wish you every blessing for the journey ahead. As our newest old scholars, you join the SPOC community, with lifelong opportunities to pursue your interests, stay connected and build new friendships. Please know you will always be welcome at St Peter’s College.

Have a wonderful weekend.
