During my first few weeks in a leadership role, my perspective of the School has shifted significantly. I’ve moved from seeing the School through the lens of a student—how it’s presented to us—to understanding the complexities and efforts that go on behind the scenes beyond the regular academic day. This change has been sudden but refreshing, and I see it as a valuable opportunity to learn, grow and seek alternate perspectives.
One of the ways I’ve embraced this change and stepped into my role was by joining the Year 7 students on their lead-in camp at Finniss. Over the two-day trip, I experienced a mix of emotions, but the strongest was a sense of nostalgia as I reflected on my own Year 7 journey and how much has changed since then. A highlight of the trip was seeing the Year 7 students muster the courage to approach me and initiate conversations. This felt like a sign of mutual respect and trust, and it was incredibly rewarding to know they see me as approachable and someone they feel comfortable talking to. These interactions gave me valuable insights into their perspectives on the camp, starting the year, the school, and what’s trending among their cohort. Even after returning to school, it was heartwarming to see these connections continue in the schoolyard, with the boys exchanging words, asking questions, and even introducing me to their friends. I’m truly glad I went on that trip—it was a meaningful experience.
Another highlight was attending the performance of the Schola Cantorum from the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in London at Mem Hall. Witnessing a world-class performance right on our doorstep was something special. Seeing the SPSC Choir join them on stage filled me with pride and happiness. It reminded me of the unique opportunities our School offers across different disciplines, and it reinforced my belief in encouraging the boys to try new things, collaborate with others, and seek alternate perspectives.
Reflecting on these past few weeks, I feel like I’ve just opened a treasure box of experiences. I’m excited to continue exploring and engaging with the various activities and opportunities that lie ahead this term.
