The Junior School Gardening Club is one year old! The Club began in October 2017 with the purpose of developing the garden beds in the Junior School to raise funds for the Anglicare Elizabeth Mission. So far we have raised $400, and we hope to double that in 2019.

It’s all hands on deck as we prepare to plant our spring/summer crops. Nigel Hodgson and his Grounds and Maintenance team have been a wonderful help, preparing the garden beds with compost and manure to make sure we have a bumper crop. Some of our keen gardeners visited them in the Senior School to express our gratitude, and give them some chocolates!

This week we planted pumpkin, yellow squash, tomatoes, basil, Greek oregano, rainbow chard, radish, lettuce, and in the coming weeks we will be planting more. Our citrus trees are looking healthy with lemons and mandarins starting to grow. The boys have been busy making compost over the winter, along with feeding the worm farm. These will be used to nourish our up and coming crops.

The boys have also been getting ready to sell the sunflower seeds we harvested from last year’s flowers, so watch out for the sunflower stall in the Junior School carpark next week.

If anyone has an extra-long hosepipe they could donate to the Gardening Club, please speak to Hayley in the Junior School front office or email Mrs Slinger directly cslinger@stpeters.sa.edu.au.

Come and join us each Wednesday and Friday morning at 8am in the Junior School garden. Everyone is welcome.
