On Wednesday of Week 7, the Year 11 Geography class ventured to the hills to conduct fieldwork related to bushfire risk and prevention. Students attended the Greenhill CFS station where they were shown around the station by CFS Captain Tim, who fielded a number of insightful questions from the boys.
Students were lucky enough to be able to have a go using the firefighting equipment, climb aboard the truck and fire the hose. Students then conducted a study of the nearby houses to determine what anti-fire measures were being taken by local residents, before having lunch in Uraidla and visiting a number of sites in Cleland Conservation Park.
Here the boys investigated the different ways that environmental conditions can cause locations to be particuarly prone to fire, such as vegetation type, slope and aspect. All students conducted themselves well and had a positive experience putting their understanding of bushfires into practice.
