As part of their studies into environmental management and natural hazards, the Year 11 Geography class recently went on an excursion to the Adelaide Hills to investigate bushfire preparedness and management strategies in one of South Australia’s most fire-prone regions. The day began with a visit to the Greenhill Country Fire Service (CFS) station, where students received a guided tour and learned about the vital role that volunteer firefighters play in protecting local communities. Members of the brigade shared insights into emergency response procedures, fire behaviour, and the significant commitment required to support the community during bushfire emergencies.
We then conducted a field assessment of residential bushfire preparedness. Using a range of criteria, including vegetation management, access to properties, and the maintenance of defendable space, students evaluated how well local homes were prepared for a potential bushfire event.
