13 students in Years 9 to 11 from St Peter’s College embarked on the 2025 German Tour in July, accompanied by three staff members. Touching down in Frankfurt, the tour party enjoyed a Rhein River cruise, before settling down to a traditional German dinner in Rüdesheim at a restaurant owned by the German grandmother of another St Peter’s College student.
The following morning, the group caught a high-speed train to Berlin, before enjoying a coach tour of the highlights of Berlin. The next day included a fascinating tour of Potsdam, including the famous Sanssouci Palace of the Prussian King, Frederick the Great.
The final day in Berlin involved visiting the fascinating Jewish Museum, the interactive Spy Museum, and the Mauer (Wall) Museum near the site of Checkpoint Charlie.
A brief stay in Nürnberg followed next, including a visit to the Führung Museum, home of the famous Nürnberg trials at the conclusion of WWII. The group then headed to Munich and were challenged by the confronting nature of the Dachau concentration camp. A trip to Allianz Arena (the home of the famous Bayern München Football Club) was appreciated by everyone, before the group had the chance to explore the fascinating science and technology museum “Deutsches Museum”.
The next day was a chance to look at the BMW Museum, before having a free day to explore Munich. The group enjoyed lunch at the well-known “Hofbräuhaus”, before spending the afternoon exploring the inner city, including climbing the high tower of St Peter’s Church, which afforded a fantastic view of the surrounding city.
The final days of the tour involved a trip to the amazing castle of Neuschwanstein (built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria) before travelling to the beautiful city of Salzburg, including a wonderful walk around the city in the early evening. The next day involved an extraordinary tour through the salt mines, which still remain an important part of the region’s economy. This was followed by a trip on a cable car to the Zugspitze, the highest point in Germany. The final night was spend in the city of Munich, before flying home to Australia!

Student Reflection
This experience was a great opportunity for me. I had been to Germany previously, but this trip gave me a whole new experience. For starters, the language. Many people spoke English (which I didn’t expect), and this made communicating much easier than I had hoped. Also, in our A&O accommodation, we were surrounded by people of all different cultures and types, and this gave us an insight as to what the real world would be like, and, if any of us decided to go to an on-site residential university, what dorm life would look like. Finally, the sightseeing was amazing. We visited all over Germany, from the Jewish Museum to the ‘Zugspitze’ to the Dachau Memorial. As a student taking Stage 1 German in school, this tour was a great way to improve my German speaking skills and knowledge of German culture, and I would highly recommend this tour to any student, regardless of background or German knowledge.
