Year 12 student Yongen Song represented South Australia at the 2026 Sydney Tange National Ice Hockey Championship, held in Newcastle from 15 to 19 July.
Returning as assistant captain, Yongen contributed five points across seven games and played an important role in a memorable championship campaign for the South Australian team.
After completing the preliminary rounds in fourth place, South Australia faced a difficult path through the finals. The team defeated top-ranked Western Australia in the semifinal before meeting New South Wales in the gold medal game. In a closely fought final, South Australia secured a 3–2 victory to claim the national championship.
The result marked only the second U18 national title in Ice Hockey South Australia’s history and was a remarkable achievement for a team that had entered the finals from fourth position.
For Yongen, the win represents another significant sporting achievement during his final year at St Peter’s College, following his selection in the Australian Men’s U18 National Team in April. Together, the two achievements reflect the commitment, leadership and skill he continues to bring to the sport.
