An Afternoon to Remember: International Student Social
On Saturday 1 August, the international student community at St Peter’s College welcomed fellow international students from St Peter’s Girls’ School for a student-led social held across the School campus. It was the first time our international student community had hosted an event of this kind. Mooncake making, an Amazing Race and a shared dinner brought everyone together for an afternoon of cultural exchange and teamwork.
What began with many unfamiliar faces soon became an afternoon of conversation, laughter and new friendships. Students encouraged one another during the challenges, shared aspects of their cultures and created lasting memories together. The event reminded us that some of the school experiences we remember most begin with a simple decision to take part. I was honoured to be appointed as one of the hosts for the event. I would like to thank the staff and student leaders from both schools whose support helped make the afternoon possible.
Serving as a host was both a responsibility and a valuable learning experience. The role helped me develop important leadership skills, including clear communication, teamwork, decision-making and confidence. I learned that leadership is not only about speaking in front of a group; it is also about remaining calm, adapting when things do not go exactly as planned and helping others feel welcomed and included.
The positive responses to our post-event survey were very encouraging. The dinner prepared by Da Costa Dining Hall was also greatly enjoyed, with the spring rolls being a particular highlight. I was proud to contribute to the event, and the experience has given me greater confidence to take on future leadership responsibilities.
