Through my role as Captain of Arts I have found that one of the rewarding aspects of leadership is seeing others flourish and thrive. There is no better example being set in Art at this moment than is being set by Jacob Foster (S&A Year 12).

Towards the end of last year, current Year 12 student Jacob Foster entered in the Adelaide Parklands Association Art competition. The biennial Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize highlights, through art, the beauty, rarity and fragility of our natural world, and in particular, our beautiful Park Lands that gird the Adelaide CBD. The prize is open to artists of all ages, from all countries, and has a number of categories, including the Young Artist prize, the Digital Category prize, Emerging Artist prize and People’s Choice prize.

Jacob was very deservingly nominated as a finalist for his exceptional piece, Family Gathering, and was invited to the VIP opening night of the exhibition at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

Jacob’s piece, (pictured below) tells a special story — the four outside circles represent men and women gathering kangaroo and honey ants for the family, whilst the inside circle is the place they gather to share in their food and together. The white-outlined paths linking the elements represent the journeys taken by the men and women to get the kangaroo and honey ants. Excitingly for Jacob, the artwork sold quickly and, even more excitingly, it was announced last week that Jacob has been awarded the People’s Choice prize for his outstanding work.

Jacob’s exceptional achievement in not only being shortlisted and exhibited, but winning such a commendable award places him amongst some of Adelaide’s most notable artists and is testament to his talent. The Art Faculty wishes Jacob every success in his future pursuits.

Postscript: It was announced on the Thursday 11 May that Jacob’s jersey design for the Adelaide 36ers to wear for their NBL Indigenous Round match has been one of four designs selected for public vote. Congratulations to Jacob for this achievement.
