2024 Artist in Residence: Jimmy Dodd inspires Students with Creative Exploration
This year, our School has had the privilege of hosting Jimmy Dodd as the 2024 Artist in Residence. Jimmy, an innovative artist known for his abstract works, has been collaborating with students in Years 7, 8, and 11 to explore the dynamic possibilities of mark making, movement, and colour in art.
Central to this creative journey has been Jimmy’s ingenious “Painting Mill,” a unique machine he constructed from repurposed everyday objects like remote controls and drills. The Painting Mill has captivated students, allowing them to experiment with new techniques and push the boundaries of their artistic expression. The hands-on experience of using this unconventional tool has not only broadened their understanding of abstract art but also inspired them to think creatively about the potential of found materials.
The artworks produced during Jimmy’s residency will be the highlight of the upcoming SALA exhibition, Spin Cycle. This exciting showcase opened last night, and will continue on Friday 30 August, from 3.30pm to 5.00pm, and Saturday 31 August, from 10.00am to 2.00pm in the Drama Centre.
The Art Faculty is thrilled to present these stunning pieces, which reflect the students’ exploration of abstract art under Jimmy’s guidance. Spin Cycle promises to be a vibrant celebration of creativity and innovation, offering a unique glimpse into the artistic journeys of our students. We encourage everyone to come and experience this remarkable exhibition, where the boundaries of art and technology (STEAM) meet in a truly inspiring way.
