On Monday 2 September we celebrated the opening of our Junior School Art Exhibition which involved our students explorations in working with metal, and highlighting the artworks that were created with our 2024 Artist in Residence, Will Sexton.

Each sculpture had an element of metal interwoven with it, with our Prep and Reception students twisting wire and threading metallic beads, creating tendrils and petals influenced by clusters of flowers. The Year 1 students explored the human form, layering aluminium to create their bodies and shaping their sculptures to capture a feeling of movement in a single action, and our Year 2 students experimented with aluminium sheets to create polyhedrons and two-dimensional relief forms. Year 3 and 4 explored the embossing of metal to create raised textures. Bees and beetles were formed with mesh and metal by Year 3; and with the influence of Torres Strait Islander artist, Brian Robinson, Year 4 created flower sculptures, layered with multiple materials. The Year 5 students were involved in a masterclass of wire manipulation and applied paper, wood and paint, to form their hanging sculptures. Year 6 students, had the unique opportunity to work with blacksmith and metal artist Will Sexton. Their copper roses reflected realistic features with buds closed and open, curled petals, and the skill and individuality of each boys creativity.

All of the boys were extremely proud of their artworks on display, and were thrilled to celebrate their creativity through the visual arts.
