At SPSC, we seek students in the Junior School who aspire to leadership roles as captains of specialty areas such as Sport, Music, Languages, Robotics, Library, Art and Drama and who consistently demonstrate our core values of truth, respect and service in their daily actions.

These students show integrity, act with honesty, and take responsibility for their choices, while treating others with kindness, inclusivity and respect. We look for boys who have developed strong character strengths, such as perseverance, teamwork, initiative and empathy and who use these qualities to positively influence and support their peers.

Effective student leaders are those who lead by example, contribute enthusiastically to their chosen speciality area and show a genuine commitment to serving the School community.

This week’s spotlight is on Henry Nguyen our Robotics Captain.

Why did you apply for this position?
I applied to be the Robotics Captain so I could inspire others to never give up. My older brother is a great example, where his determination took him to compete in the International RoboCup Competition in Brazil.
I started competing in RoboCup in Year 4 and have continued to do so each year.

Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself?
When I first competed in the State Competition, we managed to win it at the Riley Rover level. This is the level for those competing for the first time. For the competition, your robot has to follow a black line and get through obstacles and finally rescue the victims (which is a can) from the green chemical spill area.

What is one thing you would like to achieve in your role as robotics leader?
I would like to encourage more students to do robotics as it helps you to improve your engineering (building) skills as well as your coding skills. I would also like to encourage students to take up every opportunity such as competing in RoboCup at the National Competition.

Anything extra you would like to add?
This year, we have replaced all the EV3 robots with Spike Robots. The Spike robots are more efficient in calculating the stats of the robot and are easier to construct with. I’d also like to add that all the skills we learn in robotics can be used later in life.
