Latin@SPSC

This year, at the beginning of Term 2, we introduced a new co-curricular society, Latin@SPSC. Boys from Years 7 to 12 were able to sign up, and a group of enthusiastic students came along each week to learn Latin with our excellent coach, Mr Mark Porter. Latin was discontinued from our curriculum offerings 20 years ago, but bringing it back as a co-curricular has been wonderful. This has been possible thanks to Dr Garcia, Head of Languages, who organised the gatherings held every Friday in the Gordon Building.

During our weekly lessons, Mr Porter gave us worksheets and guided us through them. We learned vocabulary, explored basic grammatical concepts, and took turns translating stories about Caecilius, a banker in Pompeii, which were often amusing and fun to read. At the end of Term 2, boys who had attended either at least five sessions or three in a row received a special Latin@SPSC keyring, a fun reminder of the society and our commitment.

Latin@SPSC has been a valuable addition to co-curricular life at St Peter’s College, giving boys the chance to explore the Latin language and enjoy learning together across different year levels. The group has encouraged teamwork, curiosity and a shared sense of achievement among participants. We are looking forward to resuming sessions next year in Term 2, allowing more students to participate and build on the good foundation we have made this year. Overall, Latin over the past two terms has been a great experience, and we can’t wait for next year.
