The 86th McMichael Cup was played after school on Wednesday 6 March. The cup determines the Open Singles Tennis Champion of the School and this year was played between Year 11 finalists Callum Gale and Richard Rosser.

Attending students, staff, parents and invited guests were treated to a fine exhibition of tennis from two of the School’s most senior players. Both players have been members of the Drive Team for the past four years. Callum currently hold the No.1 position in the team and Richard No.3. While this was Richard’s first McMichael final, Callum was defending his 2018 title. He also made the final as a Year 9 student in 2017.

Both players showed considerable mastery in their attacking styles, placement and court coverage, but Callum’s hold over service certainly tipped the scales in his favour, with the victory going his way in two sets 6.2, 6.3. We congratulate Callum on achieving his second championship victory and we look forward to further opportunities to watch these two fine young players as they continue their tennis journey at Saints.

Members of the Junior School’s Year 6 Tennis Team had the honour of officiating as ball boys – just as Callum and Richard did in their day. Seb Birdseye (Year 7) managed the scoreboard. Our grateful thanks goes to Mr Garry Grosvenor for umpiring the match.

All involved in Tennis at Saints wish to thank the McMichael family for their continuing support of this long-standing competition which honours the memory of past School Captain (1929) and sporting champion Richard Verco McMichael. In particular we thank Messrs. Richard and Michael McMichael for their regular attendance at the Cup final and for the enthusiasm that they and their presence bring to this occasion.
