Last week, two of our students proudly represented our School and South Australia at the National Cross Country Championships in Sydney and what an incredible experience it was.

Athletes from across Australia travelled to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park to compete on a challenging course across hectares of rolling grassland. With gravel, grass, steep inclines and unusually hot conditions, the course tested every runner’s strength and determination. The race finished with a memorable sandy stretch inside the main equestrian centre, adding one final challenge to an already demanding course.

For Isaac Sims, competing in the 2km 10 year old boys’ event was an exceptional achievement. As the youngest boy competing for South Australia, Isaac stepped onto the national stage against some of the strongest competition SA has seen since COVID. He ran brilliantly to finish 24th out of 36 competitors.

One of Isaac’s biggest highlights was simply being there and attending the championships, lining up at the start, and experiencing the moment. Once the race began, however, something clicked. Isaac realised, “I can actually do this!” That belief carried him through a challenging course and an unforgettable national experience.

Abe Tembel competed in the 3km 11year old boys’ event, finishing an impressive 20th out of 35 competitors. Abe had set himself a personal goal of finishing in the top 20, and he achieved it! He was also thrilled to beat a runner from each of the other states! A fantastic reflection of his determination and competitive spirit.

The excitement continued the following day when both boys joined their respective South Australian relay teams. The SA teams delivered fantastic performances, with Isaac’s team finishing 4th and Abe’s team securing an outstanding third place and a bronze medal.

Throughout the championships, the South Australian team embraced the motto: “When your legs get tired, run with your heart!” And that is exactly what these boys did.

The experience was about much more than finishing positions and medals. It was about overcoming adversity, having self-belief, supporting teammates and giving your best. Every boy in the SA team demonstrated determination and sportsmanship, while embracing the opportunity to get outdoors, challenge themselves and move in a positive way.

We are incredibly proud of Isaac and Abe for the dedication, determination, courage and sportsmanship they demonstrated throughout the competition. Representing your School and your state at a national championship is a remarkable achievement.
