As a part of our National Science Week celebrations in Week 5, every Junior School class paired with another for a shared science experience. The central theme of these experiences was Seeds of Science. A special thank you to the students and families that brought in seeds they had found – this really aided in class inquiries. Here are two recounts from the many experiences on offer during the week.
Years 1 and 2
Years 1 and 2 students came together to learn about the incredible Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Did you know this special vault helps protect the seeds of the world’s food plants in the event of a global crisis? The students were then given an important mission: to build a vessel that could endure a flood! Noah had an ark to save the animals… but what about the seeds?
Our Years 1 and 2 students set off on their own Seed Rescue Mission, working together to design and build a sturdy boat that could carry a precious seed and keep it safe from a flood. Through this hands on STEM challenge, students put their creativity, problem solving, teamwork and scientific thinking to the test!
Will their boats float? Will the seeds survive? The Seed Rescue Mission was a wonderful experience!

3T and 4D
Year 3T, together with 4D, enjoyed an exciting afternoon exploring, investigating and creating with seeds! The boys became seed detectives, carefully investigating different seeds, making predictions about what they were and what they might grow into. They put on the VR headsets and stepped into a 3D world, exploring seeds scattered across a forest floor in Tasmania. To finish the afternoon, the boys created and devoured delicious energy seed balls. It was a wonderful afternoon of curiosity, discovery, creativity and hands on learning.
