Members of the St Peter’s College rowing community gathered last Friday evening to celebrate the christening of two impressive new boats joining the fleet – the Ian H Quigley and the Ward S Matthews. The occasion marked an important moment for the program and reflected the generosity and spirit that have long sustained rowing at the College.

The evening provided an opportunity to acknowledge the generosity of Nigel Clarkson (FLL 1983), Scott Matthews (HWK 1983) and Colleen Maidment, whose leadership through giving has provided this extraordinary gift to current and future crews. While the new boats will enhance performance and opportunity on the water, they also represent something deeper – a shared belief in the boys, the program and the enduring strength of the SPSC rowing community.

Speeches during the event reflected on the many experiences that shape rowing at the College: early mornings on the water, lifelong friendships, inspiring coaches and families who support generations of rowers. Together, these elements form a program built not only on competition, but on character, teamwork and resilience.

The christening also highlighted the broader vision of Project Quick Start, the initiative supporting the long-term renewal of the SPSC rowing fleet so that future generations of boys can continue to benefit from the discipline, camaraderie and opportunities the sport provides.

Members of the rowing community will next gather at the Quick Start: Rowing Community Luncheon on Friday 22 May in Da Costa Dining Hall, featuring Olympic gold medallist James Tomkins OAM and a panel discussion hosted by Georgina McGuinness.
