We are very proud of Abraham Lee (Year 5) who has been awarded 2nd prize in the primary school section of the inaugural Oliphant Science Awards special commemorative Science Writing Topic. This year’s theme asked students to reflect on the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki through the topic “If it Happened Here: The Impact of a Nuclear Bomb on Adelaide.”

The Graham F Smith Peace Foundation and the Rotary Club of Adelaide, who sponsored the award, described Abraham’s essay as “outstanding,” noting in particular “his thoughtful reflection on the ethical responsibilities of scientists and the importance of peace in our modern world.”

Following the announcement of his award, Abraham was invited by Headmaster Tim Browning to join him for morning tea in his office to discuss his essay and his reflections on nuclear weapons. Their conversation naturally broadened into a discussion of nuclear energy and nuclear-powered submarines, exploring both the risks and responsibilities that come with such technologies. Towards the end, Mr Browning invited Abraham to ask a question of his own. Abraham’s response was both striking and profound: “Mr Browning, if you had all the nuclear bombs in the world and all the nuclear power, what would you do with it?” It was an exchange that reflected the depth of Abraham’s curiosity and the seriousness with which he approached the subject.

This is an incredible achievement, recognising not only Abraham’s academic ability but also his maturity in engaging with complex and important issues. Abraham will be presented with his award, including a certificate, commemorative item from Hiroshima and a cash prize, at the Oliphant Science Awards Ceremony on 17 October at Brighton High School.

We congratulate Abraham on this wonderful accomplishment and look forward to celebrating his success at the ceremony.
